Nursery bedroom design & mural painting

My starting point was the surrounding parks, and the fern leaves found inside. I wanted to create a gender-neutral nursery that didn’t feel too “themed”, or too baby-ish. I created stencils for the walls by first drawing onto acetate and using a heat pen to remove the shapes. The stencils helped to create a layered effect on the walls.

I layered the leaf shapes by starting with dark, muddy tones, then overlaying with different tones of green – and adding a white wash of paint with a dry brush to fade out each layer as I went along.

Painting birds and forrest animals completed the look. I created the bedding and cot bumper to match, hung a canopy above the bed and mounted shelves for a reading nook. Vintage furniture found at various markets slotted in perfectly. I then hung papier-mâché animal heads above the vintage chest as a finishing touch. The result is a cosy nursery space in which to read, play and rest.
